Professor John Bosher of Ottawa has  recently published two books on the subject of Vancouver Island’s  Imperial past. Until the Canadian Citizenship Act came into force in  1947 people in Canada were legally British.   Dr.  Bosher’s first passport in 1953 stated “A Canadian  Citizen is a British Subject.”  Thousands of people, including his parents, emigrated to Vancouver Island in the belief that it was a British colony. He has spent twelve years tracing the stories of other such people and trying to work out the implications of all this.
