Victoria, 1911: Vanished and Visible Landscapes
Patrick A. Dunae
Modern Victoria took shape in the Edwardian era. In this presentation, we’ll explore the capital city in 1911, using the 5th decennial census of Canada as a vehicle. We’ll visit new landmarks like the Empress Hotel and prestigious apartment blocks such as October Mansions. We’ll visit households in now-vanished residential neighbourhoods such as Rock Bay. With contemporary maps and photographs, we’ll examine an historical geographic information system [GIS] of Victoria in the early 1900s.
Patrick Dunae is an historian and former archivist. A native of Victoria, he is a director of the Hallmark Heritage Society and a member of the City of Victoria’s Heritage Advisory Committee.
